What is an Otaku anyway?
The meaning of Otaku really depends on whom you are asking. If you ask the Japanese what an Otaku is, you might not like the meaning (especially if you consider yourself to be one). If you ask a Westerner the meaning, you will get a suger-coated definition. Otaku is the word "taku" meaning house with the honorific added. Otaku, by Japanese standards, are people with no lives who stay at home to play video games, watch anime or dork out in front of the computer. Otaku in the east are viewed negatively for the most part and one would NEVER call themselves Otaku when talking to the Japanese (I wouldn't anyway O.o). However, in the west, the term has been adopted by those who are fans of Japanese pop culture, more specifically Anime and Manga but I am beginning to hear the term used by fans of J-pop and Doramas as well. Typically, Western Otaku will classify themselves by stating what type of Otaku they are, be it Anime Otaku, J-pop Otaku etc. To fans in the west, Otaku is more a term of endearment and self-expression rather than a statement used in a negative connotation.
